| 4/8/11 Update: I will retire at the end of May 2011 after 24 years of teaching art at College of the Desert, in Palm Desert, California. Courses I taught included painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography. In addition to teaching, I served as the part-time faculty representative to the Academic Senate and was on the board of my teacher's union for several years. I have just been honored by my colleagues as an "Emeritus", a rare privilege for a part-time faculty member. I met my future husband, Ron, professor of art at College of the Desert, in 1988. Talk about perfect timing! Ron invited me to go with him as his photographer on his sabbatical study around the world. We spent an entire year traveling and studying ceramics and sculpture in 17 different countries, mostly in Asia. When we got back we got married and built a home on 3 acres in the foothills just outside Palm Desert. Ron retired at the end of the 2010 school year after nearly 40 years of teaching, and is building his personal ceramics studio in our orchard. After graduating from LSE, I got my B.F.A. in visual arts from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. I then moved to Venice, California, where I was a member of an artist's printmaking studio for several years. In 1976-77 I traveled to Iran to teach English to the Imperial Iranian Air Force, and vacationed in Afghanistan. When I came back to the US, I went to graduate school and earned an Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I missed California, so moved back here and began teaching at various colleges in the Southern California area. During these wonderful years with Ron, I have been able to expand my art career in many different directions. I especially enjoy painting public art murals. I also have a darkroom in my studio, paint, and make prints. My website is http://www.SusanSmithEvans.com if you would like to see some of my art. As I age, I am trying to be proactive with my health. I do Yoga and Bootcamp at my gym, and have been studying Tai Chi for the past 7 years.I hope to see everyone at the 2011 reunion!
5/15/10: When we got back we got married and built a home on 3 acres in the foothills just outside Palm Desert. Ron is retiring at the end of the 2010 school year after nearly 40 years of teaching, and will be building his ceramics studio in our orchard. I plan to continue teaching for one or two more years, unless I get tired of reading Ron's postcards from exotic places.
